PhD position vacancy with NLR

🚨 Attention: PhD position vacancy on urban sound modelling for Urban Air Mobility perception studies 🌆🔊

How will future Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles sound and how will UAM be perceived in our cities? If exploring that question excites you, we have an opportunity you’ll want to consider.

The purpose of the project is the predict the sound of UAM vehicles in real urban settings. We target to arrive at a prediction model that provides traditional noise metrics as well as renders binaural sound. A key part of this work is a validation study—including field measurements in real or reconstructed urban environments (like NLR’s DigiCity test site) and immersive VR comparison sessions based on predicted vs. measured sound.

🎧 These outcome of the prediction model is targeted to directly feed into VR platforms such as NLRs Virtual Community Noise Simulator (VCNS), helping researchers, policymakers, and communities better understand how UAM noise propagates in cities, and it can be used to carry out perceptual studies to the effect of UAM sound on citizens.

The position is offered by NLR – Netherlands Aerospace Centre, and it will be a collaboration between NLR and our TU/e Building Acoustics research group, as the PhD enrolment is at Eindhoven University of Technology

This role is perfect for someone who wants to blend acoustics, simulation, VR, and urban sustainability—and make a real contribution to how the next generation of aviation integrates into our cities.
